Reps To Probe Payment Of ‘high Acceptance Fees’ In Public Varsities

The House of Representatives has asked the Committee on Higher Education and Services to investigate the “high fees” charged by some government-owned universities in the country.

Admission fees are usually paid by students who are invited to enter universities.

The House’s decision to order an investigation into the payment of “high admission fees” was made following a proposal put forward by Julius Ihonvbere, a lawmaker from Edo, during a plenary session on Wednesday.

Ihonvbere, who led the debate, said the arbitrarily high fees paid by some state universities for newcomers across the country are a concern for many families.

The legislature noted that admission fees at some educational institutions have “simply become internal revenue-generating mechanisms, thus hindering the smoothness of the university admissions process”.

He said if this situation is not investigated, the number of students admitted to universities in the country could decline.

“Also, know that while some institutions require minimal fees, others are astronomical, while others require nothing. Most institutions do not charge an admission fee for tuition, so institutions the question arises as to whether it was established

the same law, ”he said.

“The dire consequences of excessive admission fees at our public universities have led to the loss of admission due to the inability to pay tuition for many payment requirements.”

The proposal was accepted after a vote by House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.

The lower house of the legislature has also called on the federal government to increase funding for public universities.

At the same time, lawmakers instructed the National University Commission (NUC) in November 2019 to “abolish admission fees at all higher education institutions”.
